ATTORNEY CHARGES LV SCHOOL CLOSING WAS FOR GAS RIGHTS
Says board members and administrators hold lucrative rights

    7/29/2010

A Westmoreland County judge will rule before the end of the week on objections filed by the Ligonier Valley School District against a lawsuit that seeks to stop the closing of the laurel Valley High School. Yesterday, attorney Joel Sansone, representing the group Save Our Rams Education, claimed he has evidence that the school closing is related to some school board members and administrators holding coal and gas rights on school property.

Sansone told Judge Gary Caruso that the closing of Laurel Valley is a scheme meant to advance the personal interests of certain people.

The district’s lawyers adamantly denied the accusation, and said the decision was based on a consultant’s report and thirteen hours of public hearings. Sansone disputed the findings of the consultant’s report, saying it contained flawed enrollment numbers and inaccurate savings estimates.

If Caruso does not approve the district’s objections, the lawsuit is scheduled to go to trial on Monday. School starts August 30th for Ligonier Valley students.
