HOMER CITY BEGINS BUDGET TALKS
Tough decisions ahead as workmen's comp premiums to increase

10/3/2012

Homer City Borough Council met last night and began to discuss the budget for next year.  The full council learned from members of the Property and Finance Committee, as well as Borough Manager Rob Nymick, that balancing next year’s budget could prove to be difficult because of a new Commonwealth law that will double the cost of worker’s compensation insurance as it relates to firefighters.

Council members discussed some options, such as creating a tax of one mill that would be earmarked to offset the cost, but members expressed concerns about raising taxes.  Mayor Kal Cecconi mentioned that some part-time police officers could be laid off, but that was not a recommendation.  After some further discussion, council agreed to let the committee continue to work on the budget for now, and Council President Richard Morris appointed Elizabeth Brown as an alternate to the committee in case a member is absent.

In other business, council voted unanimously to appoint Shawn Steffee and Abby Plowcha as junior council members.

Members also learned that a plan is in place to hold a town hall meeting on Tuesday, November 13 at 7 pm at the Homer City Fire Hall.
