The Purchase Line School Board last night named a new member to replace Matt Pearce, the board president who resigned last month for personal reasons. By a 6 to 1 vote, Josh Hopkins was named to the board. Mary Jane Pittman replaced Pearce as president of the board. Hopkins’ term will run through the end of November 2013.
The board discussed an AYP survey of teachers, many of whom expressed concerns about the PSSA tests that students must take. The state announced last month that Purchase Line High Schoolhas been placed on “corrective action 2” status, which means a multi-year failure to meet Adequate Yearly Progress under the No Child Left Behind standards, and allows the state, if it chooses, to take over the administration of the school and institute other drastic changes.
One of the teachers’ surveys revealed concerns about students taking too many tests and losing instructional time. Board member Jim Stiffler said the concerns need to be addressed at the administrative level, and if there are curriculum changes needed, they should be instituted as quickly as possible.
