State Representative Kevin Haggerty, a Democrat from Lackawanna County, introduced House Bill 196 yesterday, which calls for funding of school resource officers.
Resource officers are essentially police officers assigned to schools.
This follows President Barack Obama’s call this week for schools to hire more counselors and officers. It is not yet known where the funding will come from, Governor Tom Corbett spoke to the federal initiative saying that it will require money, but he thinks there are some areas where he can make room. Representative Haggerty praised the governor in a press release saying he was glad that a Republican governor and Democratic president could work toward the same goals and leave politics aside
