The Blairsville-Saltsburg School District Student Activities committee met last night to decide if certain sports should be consolidated, with the focus on football.
Several sports are already consolidated, such as baseball. While there was no recommendation for track & field or softball, the committee did recommend that the Blairsville Bobcats and the Saltsburg Trojans remain separate football teams. Coach Ab Detorre of the Blairsville Bobcats said that the benefits of consolidation would be useless unless the students were attending school in the same building, with so many logistical problems involving transportation and other issues. Saltsburg's athletic director, Glenn Richards, agreed, pointing out that beyond the competitive issues, it is a safety concern if team members cannot attend every practice.
The committee's findings will be brought before the whole school board at their February meeting.
