STATE GRANT FUNDS MORE MINE MAPPING BY IUP
University will share in $1.6 million DEP grant

7/19/2013

IUP’s mine mapping program will share in a $1.65 million state Department of Environmental Protection grant for a project to digitize almost 11,000 mine maps into a state database.  IUP’s share will total $484,631.

The university’s Institute for Mine Mapping, Archival Procedures, and Safety began digitizing its R&P Coal mine map collection about a decade ago, working with federal and state agencies.

Senator Don White and Representatives Dave Reed and Sam Smith all applauded the grant announcement, with White saying it “furthers the reputation of the school as an institution that provides top-notch science and technical training that has real-world applications.”

The projects funded by this grant will geo-reference 7,200 maps, digitize 3,100 maps, scan 26,900 maps, and restore or preserve 259.  Once they are digitized, they will be uploaded into DEP’s Mine Map Atlas.

IUP president Michael Driscoll says the project will help “safeguard those who must directly contend with issues surrounding old mines and emerging energy surfaces.”
