Man killed when he reportedly tries to save his dog

An Armstrong County man was killed early this morning when he reportedly rushed back into his burning home in an effort to save his dogs.

State police in Kittanning identify the victim as 43-year-old Terry Verner of Elderton.  A state police fire marshal will investigate the blaze at the one-story single-family home on Village Road in Plumcreek Township.

Firefighters from Elderton, Rural Valley, and Plumville firefighters responded just after 2 AM and found the home fully involved.  They had trouble getting to the site because of ice and as they approached, the area was rocked by a large explosion apparently from a propane tank.  The home was equipped with a wood-burning stove.
