The Blairsville-Saltsburg School Board last night welcomed a new board member. At a special meeting, the board chose Richard Serrifin to fill the vacancy left by Ed Smith. Serrifin will represent the Blairsville side of the district. According to Assistant Superintendent Ian Magness, Serrifin will fill the remainder of Smith's term, which expires in January of next year. If he wishes to run for the full term after that, he may do so.
Smith, who served on the board from 2001 until his resignation for health reasons last month, had been president of the school board since 2010. His resignation was accepted by the board after an executive session during which undisclosed rumors were discussed. One board member saying they had to do with a building and grounds committee meeting in February, but Smith said he was stepping down purely for reasons of health.
At a meeting March 20th, George Rowley was named board president to replace Smith and Mary Whitfield was elected vice president.
