The State System of Higher Education board of governors today to approved a 4.5 percent tuition rate increase for the coming academic year. This raises the total tuition for two semesters at IUP and the thirteen other State System schools to $5,804 for in-state students, a $250 increase. Last year, tuition rose 3.7 percent.
The recommendation for the tuition hike came yesterday afternoon from the board’s administrative and finance committee, which also recommended an increase of $25 to the technology fee, raising it to $231.
There are 117,000 students at the state-owned schools, and 90percent of them are from within the state’s borders.
Some of the university presidents and faculty unions were asking for increases as high as 8 percent. It’s rare that those two divergent entities agree on anything, but both are anticipating a difficult time in 2012 when the dreaded pension spike hits. Five universities - including IUP on Tuesday - have notified their faculty unions to expect possible layoffs in 2011-12.
