Main Street in Homer City was shut down yesterday afternoon at the demolition site of the former S&T Bank building after an excavator rolled onto its side.
Around 2:30 p.m. an excavator, owned by Marsh Contracting of Dixonville was demolishing the original part of the bank building. The excavators was positioned on a big pile of rubble that was being used as a ramp to get near the top of the building when the large piece of equipment rolled on it side.
A crane was called to the scene to pull the excavator upright. “Around 5 o’clock or 6 o’clock, we were able to get a 100 ton crane in and hook it to the machine along with two riggers that helped guide it” said Homer City Fire Department First Assistant Chief, Joe Iezzi . “And the operator was actually able to climb up in it and back it out of the way. So we were lucky no one was hurt and we got through it pretty easy.”
In addition to shutting down some roadways, Homer City Police Chief Louie Sacco said the situation caused power to be turned off in the area. “For safety concerns power was shut off along Miller and also parts of North and some of South Main Street,” said Sacco. “The reason being is because with the power lines so close to the building, if something would happen, or come down, it would have probably taken some power lines down with them, so power was shut down for precautionary reasons.”
Power was not restored until around 11 p.m. after crews tore the building down to where it no longer could fall on power lines. Main Street was also reopened around 11 p.m.
The operator of the excavator, who has not been publicly identified, was not injured in the rollover.
The Homer City, Indiana, Blacklick, Brush Valley, and Coral-Graceton fire departments were all called to the scene of the accident. Citizens Ambulance Service was also on scene.
