Indiana County’s unemployment rate rose one-tenth of a percentage point in June to 8.9 percent. Pennsylvania’s rate held steady at 9.2 percent, while the U.S. rate was down two-tenths of a percentage point to 9.5 percent. Indiana County’s rate has remained below both state and national rates for the fourth straight month. Over the year, the Indiana County’s unemployment rate was up 1.5 percentage points.
June unemployment rates for all Pennsylvania’s 67 counties ranged from 6.5 percent in Centre County to 15.0 percent in Cameron County. Indiana County’s rate was 24th lowest, tied with the rates of Delaware and Susquehanna counties. Rates for neighboring counties were: Armstrong at 9.7 percent , Cambria at 10.2 percent, Clearfield County at 10.8 percent, and Jefferson County at 10.5 percent, and Westmoreland at 8.5 percent.
The Indiana County’s total nonfarm jobs count dropped 800 in June to 33,900. State and local government continued the seasonal education-related losses that began in May, shedding an additional 700 jobs. Goods-producing jobs reached 6,800, the highest level since December 2008, with a gain of 100 in mining, logging & construction.
