The holiday season got a bit brighter last night as IUP held its annual tree-lighting event at John Sutton Hall.
With music by the IUP Chorale and Chorus, the East Pike and Eisenhower elementary vocal ensembles, and the IUP Brass Ensemble, the festivities included a trip inside Sutton to the Blue Room for the eighth annual decorated-tree event. Fourteen trees decorated by IUP fraternities and sororities and other university groups are on display in the Blue Room, and people could choose their favorite by donating a dollar per vote, with the money to benefit an IUP scholarship fund. Each of the trees is sponsored by organizations and individuals who have contributed to support student initiatives at IUP.
More than 300 students from the fraternities and sororities have already raised $4,000 for the student initiatives and $1,500 for the scholarship fund.
The decorations on the donated trees were purchased with funds raised by IUP students, and the fourteen decorated trees and fourteen others will be donated to families in the Salvation Army’s Treasures for Children program.
