STATE SYSTEM NEGOTIATOR MAKES HIS POINT
Says APSCUF deal must reflect financial realities

12/7/2012

For most of the time during the contract negotiations between the State System of Higher Education and APSCUF, the faculty union at IUP and the thirteen other state-owned universities, the union has been the one most likely to shed light on the two sides’ positions.

However, the State System has started to open up more, and yesterday one of the chief  negotiators issued a detailed explanation of their issues.  Vice Chancellor for Human Resources and Labor Relations Gary Dent says the other six unions with which the State System deals all agreed to concessions in their new deals because they recognized that the resources are no longer sustainable and students now shoulder 75 percent of the cost of operating the schools.  He says APSCUF needs to acknowledge that too.

Dent reiterates the State System’s positions on healthcare, wages and duties for temporary faculty, and compensation for developing distance educatiuon courses, which are the main stumbling blocks in the current negotiations.

The next bargaining session is sheduled for Tuesday.   .
