Tree limb snaps, falling on Armstrong Township man

An Armstrong Township man was killed yesterday when a large tree limb fell on him as he and his uncle were clearing trees from the edge of a field.

Indiana County Coroner Mike Baker says it happened on land leased by the Reeger Farm, just off Anthony Run Road in Center Township.  30-year-old Jason William Drew of Laurel Road was using an extended chain saw to cut the limb, which was about 18 feet overhead, when the blade of the saw became pinched.  The two men attached a chain around the limb and attempted to pull it free with a tractor as Drew stood underneath holding the saw, but the limb snapped and fell onto Drew.

Baker says the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by deputy coroner Jerry Overman at 2:50 PM. The cause of death was blunt force trauma of the head, and it’s been ruled accidental.

No autopsy is planned and toxicology tests are pending.  State police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.
