Mark Hess, the long time swim coach at Indiana High School, passed away yesterday.  Hess was coach at I.H.S. for 29 years, having helped the Indiana High swim team to 24 section championships, four district championships and three straight WPIAL Class AA Boys’ team championships, along with one individual state champion.  Brendan Bertig, a senior on the swim team, talked about how important Hess was to his life.

Indiana High School Athletic Director Pat Snyder talked about what made him special as a swim coach, as a junion high health and phys-ed teacher, and as a person.

Hess also worked with the YMCA Swimming program, and was also a dedicated volunteer at Zion Lutheran Church.  Mary Ann Yeamans, a teacher alongside Hess, called him a Genuine individual.

Mark Hess passed away at the age of 56.

Indiana students are having a candlelight vigil memorial Sunday evening at 7 PM on the grounds outside of the Mack Park Swimming pool.   Many students have left flowers in a makeshift memorial already.
