Over 900 people, many of them students, turned out last night for a candlelight vigil in honor of longtime Indiana High School phys ed teacher and swim coach Mark Hess, who passed away on Friday afternoon at his home. He was 57 years old. The event last night was held at the Mack Park Pool.
Hess was a much-loved teacher and mentor to students for three decades, and last night’s vigil amid tears and memories was an appreciation of a man who truly cared for his students and athletes. He was inducted into the Indiana County Sports Hall of Fame earlier this year, but within the Indiana school community, he was just as celebrated for his concern for every student. He also taught Sunday School at Zion Lutheran Church for more than thirty years.

The family will receive friends at the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home in Indiana tomorrow and Wednesday from 2 to 8 PM, and the funeral service will be held at Zion Lutheran Church on Thursday at 11 AM. He will be interred at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in his native Boalsburg in Centre County.
