Rita A. O’Brien, 84, of Indiana, PA died Sunday, Jan 20, 2013. She was born on April 6, 1928 in Colver, Pennsylvania to John M.O’Brien and Grace (Scally) O’Brien.
She graduated from Windber Hospital Nursing School, which began her life’s passion of nursing. She subsequently earned her BSN at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She loved nursing and had a long and successful career as a school nurse in Cambria County School District. In 1980 she earned an advanced degree as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner from the University of Pittsburgh.
She retired from Cambria County School system but continued to keep a hand in nursing by working as a substitute school nurse in Indiana and Homer Center School Districts when needed. She also volunteered at the Alice Paul House, and carried the banner for other women’s causes, as well. She remained active in many professional nursing associations and school associations.
She is survived by her husband Edward R. Denning of Indiana, PA, her brother Hugh R. O’Brien and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, John M. O’Brien, her mother Grace (Scally) O’Brien, her brothers Matthew and John and sisters, Grace (O’Brien) Merritt and Mary (O’Brien) Denning.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Friday, January 25, 2013 at St Bernard of Clairvaux, Roman Catholic Church, Indiana, PA. The family has entrusted the arrangements to the Rairigh-Bence Funeral Home, Indiana.
