John Charles Woolcock, Ph.D., 57, of Indiana, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at his residence, losing his battle with pancreatic cancer.

A son of John E. and Florence Read Woolcock, he was born May 16, 1955, in Camden, N.J., and raised in Cherry Hill, N.J.

Dr. Woolcock was a graduate of Garden State Academy High School and Southern Missionary College.  John earned his Ph.D. at the University of California at Riverside in 1984 in inorganic chemistry.  He was a chemistry professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania since 1984.  John was chairman of the chemistry department from 2005 to 2011 and was a charter member of the IUP Center for Teaching Excellence.  From 1999 to 2000, John received the IUP College of Natural Science and Mathematics Outstanding Achievement Award, and in 2012, he received the Chemistry Department Distinguished Service Award.  The Center for Teaching Excellence honored his passion for teaching and students by establishing the John Woolcock Teaching Scholar Award, which will be awarded annually to IUP faculty members.  John was a “Star Trek” and science fiction fan.  He enjoyed watching baseball, especially the Pirates, traveling and spending time with his family.  He was rarely seen without a book in his hand.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Dr. Ruth B. Jacobson Woolcock, of Indiana; two daughters, Sara Catherine Woolcock, of Northampton, Mass., and Lindsey Jane Woolcock, of Pittsburgh; his mother, Florence Read Woolcock, of Mc Donald, Tenn.; a brother, James Woolcock and wife, Mary Jo, of Lyerly, Ga.; two sisters, Nancy Ahmed and husband Farid, of Greenville, NC., and June Wyatt and husband Mike, of Gastonia, N.C; a brother-in-law, Alan Horton, of Gastonia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, John E. Woolcock; and a sister, Linda Horton.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Robinson-Lytle, Inc., Indiana, where a celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. Arthur C. Dilg officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Dr. Woolcock to the Foundation for IUP, G1 Sutton Hall, 1011 South Drive, Indiana, PA 15705-1046.
