IUP swept a doubleheader at California last night, with the women taking the first game, 59-47 and the men struggling, but winning their game, 70-68.
Sarah Pastorek scored 16 points, pulled down 11 rebounds, and blocked three shots to lead the women. Amy Fairman and Talen Watson each scored 11, and Marita Mathe added 10. IUP led by five at halftime, but he Vulcans opened the second half with a 9-0 run to take a four point lead. Fairman tied it up at 35 with a 3-pointer but Cal again sprinted ahead with a 5-0 run before IUP went on a 22-7 run of their own.
Pastorek is now in 12th place among IUP’s all time scoring leaders, with 1,203 points, and is just 22 away from the top ten. IUP is 12-4, 7-3 in the PSAC West.
In the men’s game, IUP seemingly had a comfortable second half lead, up by 14 points with 9:03 left, but Cal went on a late 16-0 run to go ahead 63-61. Scooter Renkin tied it with a jumper and Danny Ayebo hit four straight foul shots. Cal pulled to within one before Renkin hit two free throws to make it 69-66. After a Cal two-pointer, Anthony Wells made one-out of-two from the line to set the final at 70-68.
Renkin led IUP with 16. Wells had 13 and Marcel Souberbielle added 10. IUP is 12-2 overall and 8-2, tied with Slippery Rock for the top spot in the PSAC West.
Both IUP teams are back in action with a doubleheader Saturday against Clarion at the KCAC.
