Brendan Ryan singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates, 1-0, in the first of a three-game series at Busch Stadium. Despite a two-hour, 20-minute rain delay to open the game St. Louis starter Chris Carpenter was his usual dominant self. He threw eight shutout innings of five-hit ball, with three walks and six strikeouts. Cardinals reliever Ryan Franklin got the win in relief and is now 6-and-1. Pirates starter Jeff Karstens threw six innings of seven hit shutout ball, he didn't factor in the decision. The Pirates' Javier Lopez took the loss in relief.
