Another masterful performance by Francisco Liriano as the Pirates beat San Diego last night, 3-1, on the west coast. Liriano pitched seven shutout innings and earned his 14th win of the season, which fior him did nto start until May 11th. He is tied with two others for most wins in the National League.
Pedro Alvarez hit his league-leading 31st home run and his 6th-inning single got under the glove of teh Padres outfielder and Andrew McCutchen and Alvarez came all teh way around to score. Reliever Mark Melancon gave up a run in the 9th, but earned the save.
The Cardinals won again, scoring four times in the 8th inning in a come-from-behind 8-5 win over Milwaukee, so the Pirates remain up on St. Louis by one game in the NL Central.
A.J. Burnett gets the ball tonight for the Bucs for Game 2 of the series. He is 5-and-8 with a 3.18 ERA in 22 starts this season. The Padres will counter with right-hander Tyson Ross, who is 3-and-5 with a 2.62 ERA. Airtime on Newstalk 1160 WCCS is 9:45 PM.
In other baseball news, the Angels’ Albert Pujols will miss the rest of the season with a torn plantar fascia in his left foot. He hit a career-low .258 with 17 home runs and 64 RBI in 99 games this season, and is still owed $212 million over the next eight seasons
